Project Coordinator

The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is an intergovernmental organization (Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) with its headquarters (Secretariat) in Helsinki, Finland, working to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. We are currently seeking to recruit an enthusiastic Project Coordinator to coordinate and implement HELCOMs tasks for an upcoming Project focused on marine protection, in which HELCOM is partnering. The Project Coordinator will also contribute to the work in the PROTECT BALTIC project, specifically around ecological coherence and connectivity models.  

Both the upcoming Project and PROTECT BALTIC are Horizon Europe funded projects, aligned with the EU’s Restore our Ocean and Water Mission.  

Responsibilities 

The main tasks: 

  • Coordinate and support the implementation of the Project as the representative from HELCOM and provide content expertise in all relevant work packages; 
  • Ensure appropriate flow of information between the project and HELCOM groups and decision-making processes and set up working arrangements to ensure that the respective national and regional cooperation processes will be able to contribute to and benefit from the project 
  • Support and ensure synergies between the Project and other projects in HELCOMs portfolio; 
  • Take part in organizing the Project workshops, meetings and events together with other partners in the project; 
  • Disseminate Project progress and results internally and externally;  
  • Actively take part in preparing, editing and commenting Project outputs and Project reports, guidelines, manuals and other Project deliverables and prepare the Project reporting; 
  • Prepare content for social media and write and edit news items and articles in line with the guidance of the lead partner on communication in the Project;  
  • Contribute to science communication, dissemination material and outreach of the Project; 
  • Cooperate, build partnerships and networks with ongoing Mission Oceans and other related EU projects. 

The tasks are expected to be carried out independently. However, the Project Coordinator will cooperate closely with the HELCOM staff involved in PROTECT BALTIC and other sister projects, who will provide support and general guidance. 

Qualifications and experience 

The tasks require a person with background in marine biology, marine ecology, conservation ecology, marine conservation or a corresponding field and with strong skills in ecological coherence and connectivity. Strong skills in science communication and social media tools are also required. Previous experience working with marine protection and/or marine management and/or in science-to-policy communications in an international environment are significant benefits.  

The successful candidate shall have: 

  • University degree (Masters degree or equivalent) in marine biology, marine ecology, conservation ecology or related field; 
  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience at the national or international level;

Familiarity or experience with:  

  1. EU project funding and project coordination, 
  2. Marine protection and Baltic Sea ecology, 
  3. Ecological coherence and /or connectivity models, 
  4. Science-to-policy communications and social media tools; 

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills and proven ability to deliver to tight timelines; 
  • Ability to work independently, take responsibility and initiative;Excellent social and team skills; 
  • Thorough knowledge of the English language as well as high competence in IT skills. 

Experience in the following will be considered an asset:  

  • Experience of international policy cooperation; 
  • Experience with guiding participatory processes; 
  • Developing innovative approaches to ensure reaching a wide variety of target audiences. 

Terms of appointment  

The appointment is planned to be full time for 3,5 years, starting in the beginning of September 2024. The salary for the position is 3.000€ per month, please note that the HELCOM salaries are exempt from Finnish income tax.
