Vacancy: Data trainee – spatial data management 

The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission – Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) is an intergovernmental organization (Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) with its headquarters (Secretariat) in Helsinki, Finland, working to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. We are currently seeking to recruit an enthusiastic trainee to carry our tasks related to harmonising and collecting spatial data for the EU-funded PROTECT BALTIC project ( PROTECT BALTIC | Preserve, revive, thrive).  

PROTECT BALTIC is a Horizon Europe funded project, aligned with the EU’s Restore our Ocean and Water Mission. The project aims for a healthy Baltic Sea environment by increasing spatial protection to 30% by 2030, through the development of a protection optimization framework. The framework will be the first of its kind, co-created with Baltic Sea member states, and will serve as a blueprint for the planning, executing, governing, managing and monitoring of Baltic Sea protection and restoration initiatives.  


The main tasks: 

  • Organisation and compilation of environmental spatial data coming from multiple sources in response to a HELCOM data call; 
  • Collection of data from available open sources; 
  • Analysis and quality assurance of collected data; 
  • Harmonization of data (classification unification, unit conversions, communication with data providers and completion of missing data); 
  • Creation and running of simple data processing scripts that analyze and edit spreadsheets and shapefiles. 

Qualifications and experience 

The tasks require a person who is meticulous and has a high attention to detail. A love for data and organization is an asset in this position.  

The successful candidate shall have: 

  • A minimum of two years of studies in computer science/geography/environmental sciences or related fields at a university or university of applied sciences level, 
  • Experience working with spreadsheet software, preferably Excel, 
  • Familiarity with GIS data (vector and raster) and software, preferably ArcGIS Pro. 

Experience in the following will be considered an asset:  

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, 
  • Ability to work independently, 
  • Scripting/programming skills in implementing tasks, e.g. familiarity and skills to apply Python or VBA for data processing. 

Terms of appointment  

The appointment is planned to be full time for 4 months, starting in the beginning of April 2024, with the potential of an extension. Part-time options may also be available. The salary for the position is 1.800 € per month, please note that the HELCOM salaries are exempt from Finnish income tax.
